My name is Laurine Delforge, age 25, and I’m about to live my dream of becoming (sort of) an Olympian. My name indeed appears in the list of hockey officials appointed for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (I had to double check it like five times to make sure I saw it right).
For the last 20 years, I have been pursuing my passion: to take part in the sport I love, hockey, and to do this from both sides of the game - as a player and, less commonly, as an umpire. I believe in doing what you love and loving what you do, and believe it or not, umpiring can be a passion, just like playing the game.
The Olympics have always been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. But let’s admit it: get selected as an umpire was never really part of the plan. I have played for the Belgian national team in all youth categories, and at that time, I had of course the drive to make it to the ultimate goal of playing for my country in the greatest competition in the world. When it became clear that this was not going to happen, I just took a different route. A road less traveled, but traveling it was so worth the reward!
Umpiring is certainly one of the hardest jobs, but at the same time one of the most valuable experiences you can have in your life. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and teaches you values like integrity, reliability, respect and perseverance. I would not trade it for anything.
The first time I stepped out onto the field with a yellow shirt, I was 17. Four years later, I was flying to South Africa to take part in my first tournament at a senior level competition. Surprisingly enough for me, I received my FIH badge straight away, and since then, I have been climbing the echelons of international umpiring rather quickly.
Players and umpires have various facets in common. Umpires, like players, are passionate. Umpires, like players, have ambitions. And it may not be common knowledge but umpires, like players, train hard and prepare themselves to perform at their best - and believe me, this involves much more than keeping fit and knowing the rules. As the level of competition raises, so do the demands and expectations to perform at our best.
In Rio, I will be umpiring the greatest players in the world, on the best possible stage. Of all sporting events, the Olympics rise above all else. It’s the biggest event, but also the biggest challenge I ever faced… and I’ve got to be up to that challenge. This does require larger budget and therefore raising funds to help me make it to the next stage in my umpiring development and prepare for peak performance at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
By making my minimum goal of 4000€, I will be able to do the following:
➔ Give my mental strength a workout under the guidance of Jef Brouwers, who will help me build my self-confidence and stay calm under the weight of the world’s eyes pressure.
Personality screening test: 520 EUR
12 sports psychology sessions: 900 EUR
(Session fee: 75 EUR)
➔ Optimize my physical condition and prevent any injury thanks to a specific program set up by Remoove and targeted to the particular physical demands of umpiring a game of hockey.
Physical screening test: 400 EUR
Education: 480 EUR
Work-out: 800 EUR
(Session fee: 40 EUR)
➔ Train my eyes by integrating a high-end sports visual training that will enhance my peripheral vision, my speed of recognition and my capacity to concentrate, and so promote my decision-making skill.
Visual screening test: 65 EUR
10 visual training sessions: 500 EUR
(Session fee: 50 EUR)
And if I can raise 2000 EUR extra:
➔ Be coached by an expert from the Expert Academy to improve my body language skills and become a master of the art of non-verbal communication.

Curriculum Vitae
Some of my achievements to date include:
• two EuroHockey Championships (2013, 2015);
• two World League Semi-Finals, i.e. World Cup and Olympic qualifying events (2013, 2015);
• one Asian Games (2014);
• one World Cup (2014), where I broke the record for being the youngest ever umpire to officiate at that event.
And now, I have the privilege to reach the ultimate of international appointments: the Olympics, where I will be the sole hockey female representative of Belgium.
