Mijn naam is Toon Peeters en ik ben momenteel 18 jaar.

 Sinds 2008 speel ik kajakpolo bij TKC in Turnhout. Vanaf het begin was mijn doel om bij de Belgisch top in deze kajakdiscipline te behoren en mee te spelen in het Belgisch Nationale Team.

kajakpolo is een water- en balsport, die kan worden beschouwd als een combinatie van kajakken en waterpolo.
Het verschil met waterpolo is dat de spelers in een kajak zitten en dat de doelen boven het water hangen. Het is de bedoeling om zo veel mogelijk doelpunten te maken. Kajakpolo is een zeer snelle en fysiek zware sport. Het spel verplaatst zich razendsnel van de ene helft van het veld naar de andere helft. Hierdoor kan bij buitenstaanders de indruk ontstaan dat deze sport erg agressief en gevaarlijk is. Het is echter een relatief veilige sport, blessures komen weinig voor. Dit komt vooral door de goede uitrusting (helm met gezichtsbeschermer en een zwemvest dat als stootkussen kan dienen). De tactiek van kajakpolo lijkt enigszins op die van handbal. Kajakpolo wordt zowel indoor als buiten gespeeld.

In het begin was het niet makkelijk om me als jongste spelertje in het team staande te houden. Ik moest me telkens opnieuw weer bewijzen en knokken voor mijn plaatsje in het team. Dat heeft mij gevormd en van mij de speler gemaakt die ik vandaag ben.

Nu 8 jaar later heb ik mijn doel bereikt en ben ik geselecteerd bij het U21-team voor het WK kajakpolo in syracuse (Italië) dat doorgaat van 28 Augustus tot en met 4 September 2016.

Als lid van het Nationale team sta ik in voor mijn eigen onkosten. Dit behelst de trainingen op verplaatsing, het vervoer, de accommodatie en het eten tijdens de oefentornooien in het binnen- en buitenland. Ook zorgt ieder voor zijn eigen boot, zijn eigen peddel en zijn eigen helm. De reddingsvesten mogen wij van de Belgische kajakfederatie gebruiken.
De uitrusting wordt tijdens elk tornooi aan een grondige inspectie onderworpen en moet voldoen aan de strenge normen die de International Canoepolo Federation ons oplegt.
Aangezien kajakpolo een contactsport is, lijdt het materiaal erg tijdens de wedstrijden en moet er geregeld nieuw materiaal aangekocht worden om in orde te zijn met de ICF voorschriften.
Een helm met gezichtsbescherming kost 75,-€. Een spatzeil kost 70,- €. Voor een peddel betaal je 250,-€ en voor een gecertifieerde boot moet je 2000,-€ neertellen.
Voor vervoers- en verblijfskosten voor de volgende maanden zal ik nog eens eenzelfde bedrag neertellen.

Als student is dit een zware dobber. Door vakantiewerk en weekendwerk tracht ik zoveel mogelijk de kosten te dekken. Maar aangezien de trainingen en geplande tornooien in weekends doorgaan, valt er reeds een groot deel inkomsten weg.

Als lid van het Nationale kajakpolo team U21 naar het Wereldkampioenschap Kajakpolo in Syracuse (Italië) gaan en er de Belgische driekleur gaan verdedigen. Daar heb ik 8 jaar lang voor geknokt. Dit is mijn droom die werkelijkheid wordt. En daar heb ik jouw hulp voor nodig.

My name is Toon Peeters and I am currently 18 years old.

Since 2008 I play canoepolo at TKC in Turnhout. From the start my goal was to be among the Belgian top in this kayak discipline and play with the Belgian National Team.

Canoe polo is a water- and ball sport, which can be considered as a combination of kayaking and waterpolo.
The difference with waterpolo is that players sit in a kayak and that the goals are above the water. The aim is to make as many goals as possible.
Canoe polo is a very fast and physically demanding sport. The game moves quickly from one half of the field to the other half. This can give the outsiders the impression that this sport is very aggressive and dangerous. However, it is a relatively safe sport, injuries are rare, this is mainly due to the good equipment (helmet with face grid and a life jacket that serves as a pad).The tactics of canoe polo are similar to handball. Kayak polo is played outdoors and indoors.

At the start it was not easy for me to maintain my place as the youngest player in the team. I had to prove myself again and again and again and fight for my place in the team. This has shaped me and made me the player I am today.
Now, eight years later, I achieved my goal and I’m selected for the U21 team for the World Cup canoe polo in Syracuse (Italy) which will take place from 28 August until 4 September 2016.

As a member of the national team, I am responsible for my own expenses. This includes training sessions, transportation, accommodation and food during the exhibition tournaments in Belgium and abroad.
Each team member need to buy his own boat, his own paddle and his own helmet. The lifejackets we can use from the Belgian canoe federation.
The equipment is subjected to a thorough inspection during each tournament and must meet the strict standards set by the International Canoe Polo Federation.
Since canoe polo is a contact sport, the material suffers a lot during matches and must be replaced when damaged in order to live up to ICF rules.
A helmet with face grid costs 75, - €. A spraydeck costs 70,- €. For a paddle, I pay 250, - € and for a certified boat I have to pay 2000 - €.
Transport and accommodation will be a similar amount.

As a student, this is a tough one. By working holiday and weekends, I try as much as possible to cover the costs. But as the training and scheduled tournaments are on weekends, there is no time to work then.

Defending the Belgian colors as a member of the National Canoe polo team U21 at the World championships Canoe polo in Syracuse (Italy) is a dream coming true. A dream for which I have trained and fought for for the last 8 years. To make the dream come true, I need your help.
